Up close: Will Togher, Commercial Manager

April 17, 2023 | People

Will Togher swears by the motto “A problem shared is a problem halved”.

Joining Paynter Dixon more than 12 years ago, Will has progressed from contracts administration to management, overseeing the commercial functions of projects in hospitality, education, aged care, remedial and community sectors.

Hailing from Ireland, our Commercial Manager studied quantity surveying and construction economics at university, leading to several industry jobs in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Bitten by the travel bug, the young quantity surveyor went backpacking for a year before stopping to recharge the batteries and work in Sydney.

“I started with Paynter Dixon on a working holiday visa and then progressed to a skilled migrant visa, before eventually obtaining residency” reflects Will. “There’s no turning back!”

Over the years, Will has become well-versed in the nuances of contracts administration.

“The process is more direct and open in Australia, which makes life easier for all involved. There is greater communication with subcontractors, which is on a positive footing.”

Paynter Dixon’s approach to partnering within and outside the business is a point of difference.

“We often say a problem shared is a problem halved, which speaks to the way we build relationships. Our commercial team makes good use of the open plan office. Contract and cost issues are discussed within the team, inviting ideas and workarounds.”

The design and construct model of project delivery, which sees Paynter Dixon work from concept to completion, is a contributing factor to relationship building.

“We develop long-term relationships within our supply chains which create better outcomes for all involved.”

“Subcontractors come forward with ideas on projects that can save money, solve problems, and even lay the groundwork on future projects which create efficiency wins down the line.”

“This is about problem solving and adding value through collaboration, from design development to construction on site.”

“Or as we like to say in contracts administration – you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar!”
