The Australian Turf Club was issued with a Fire Safety Order to rectify the cladding on the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand at Royal Randwick Racecourse. Paynter Dixon was engaged to oversee the removal and replacement of almost 8,500 square metres of cladding. Nearly 8,000 coloured panels (silver, black and woodgrain) consists of 4mm aluminium sheet with a powder coast finish. The former cladding was recycled by Fairview at their recycling plant in Lithgow.

The cladding process was aided by a 3D photographic model of the grandstand constructed from almost 400 images. This offers a digital walk-through of the building, assisting with the preparation of a dilapidation report, and the means to re-confirm panel measurements with millimetre precision.

Our site team worked in a live environment which included race days and corporate events. Consistent communication with the Australian Turf Club was critical to minimising disruption through the sequencing of work across building elevations. An access plan has also met the complex requirements of access, incorporating abseiling, lightweight aluminium cladding and the use of 135 foot boom lifts.
